2nd Grade Sample
Home

The second grade CD contains 25 passages of 200-400 words, and 5 multiple-choice questions within each passage.  The questions are placed in the passage so students will gain confidence in finding proof for their answers within limited text.  Also included on the CD are a Teacher's Edition and an index.  The Teacher's Edition has "proof" for each answer highlighted in the text.  The index tells word count, science TEKS, and reading TEKS for each passage.

This sample passage targets science TEKS 2.7A.

Experiments

1          Here are some science experiments for you to try.  For each one you should observe, measure, record, analyze, predict, and illustrate in your science journal.

2          Measure a popsicle.  Record the measurement and predict how long it will take for the popsicle to disappear.  Lick your popsicle ten times.  Measure, record, and illustrate what happens.  Lick it ten more times and measure.  Keep doing this until the popsicle is gone.  Analyze what happens to the popsicle to change its size.

3          Put a handful of soil on a small plate.  Weigh the soil and write down the starting weight.  Put the plate outside for half an hour.  Predict what will happen.  Weigh the soil again.  Did the weight change?  Observe, record, and illustrate what happens.  Analyze why the mass of the soil is changing.

1   What is the first thing you should do with your popsicle?

() lick it

() measure it

() illustrate it

() make it disappear

2   To get a handful of soil in paragraph 3, you should use your -

() ruler

() thumb

() ear

() hand

4          Put a thermometer outside.  Record the temperature each hour and predict what it will be the next hour.  Illustrate what you see.  Analyze the changes in temperature.

5          Put water and a drop of food coloring in a clear cup.  In another clear cup, put a few drops of bleach.  Predict what will happen when you pour the colored water into the cup with the bleach.  Observe, record, and illustrate what happens.  Analyze why the color changes.

6          Put a sheet of paper on a desk.  Predict what will happen when you blow on the paper.  Record and illustrate what happens.  Analyze why the paper changes position.

3   What do you think will happen when you add the colored water to the bleach?

() the color stays the same

() the color changes

() the water disappears

() the bleach does nothing

4   Paragraphs 4, 5, and 6 are all about different kinds of -

() food coloring

() thermometers

() changes

() games

7          Use dish soap and a wand to blow bubbles.  Predict how long the bubbles will last.  Blow.  Count the bubbles.  Count again after two seconds, and then five seconds.  Observe, record, and illustrate what you see.  How did the number of bubbles change?  What caused it to change?  Analyze what you see.

8          Fill a glass with water.  Use a spoon to gently tap the glass.  Observe the sound.  Pour some of the water out and tap with the spoon again.  What happens to the sound?  Try different amounts of water and predict what will happen.  Record your results.  Analyze the changes in sound.

9          Make a ramp.  Put a toy car at the top of the ramp.  Predict what will happen if you push the car down the ramp.  Predict what will happen when the car gets to the flat ground.  Push the car.  Observe, record, and illustrate what happens.  Analyze how the movement changes when the car is on the flat ground.

5   Which statement tells what makes the sound change?

() Count again after two seconds

() Try different amounts of water

() Put a toy car at the top of the ramp

() Record and illustrate what happens
